1. Metaphors and Pictures as Visioning Tools

In search of a common vision for the future of the region, leaders of Guilford County, North Carolina, held a symposium on the High Point University campus that featured speakers such as Howard Putnam, former CEO of Southwest and Braniff Airlines. Wrapping up the full-day discussion was John Alexander, president and CEO of the Center for Creative Leadership.

Pointing out that the county needs to gain “…a deeper understanding of who we are—as individuals and as a community—and who we want to be,” Alexander affirmed the power of storytelling as a tool for developing a shared vision. Referring to another speaker’s comment about the value of people knowing one another’s stories, Alexander suggested that continual collaboration be focused on listening to one another’s stories to create “metaphors and pictures of what a community’s future can be.”

2. A Malaysian “Spin” on Storytelling

Aneeta Sundararaj, Kuala Lumpur-based author of How To Tell A Great Story, recently interviewed Evelyn as a lead-in to the Singapore Storytelling Festival and Asian Storytelling Congress, where Evelyn will be presenting several programs during the events, which run August 24- September 9.

The wide-ranging interview is posted on Sundararaj’s web site, which catalogues her ongoing series of discussions with leaders in communication arts from around the world. The list includes self-publishing expert and author Dan Poynter.

3. New Ideas from Dead CEOs

New Ideas From Dead CEOs: Lasting Lessons From The Corner Office is more than just an intriguing title; it’s a fascinating collection of tales about the founders of well-known companies, such as Estee Lauder, McDonalds, and Krispy Kreme, particularly “their effect on their industries and how their legacies are relevant to modern management scenarios.” Author Todd Buchholz, economic advisor to former U.S. President George H.W. Bush, says his skill for storytelling helped in that job, and now he’s applied his talent to telling stories about 10 of the 20th century’s most iconic business figures.

What’s his best advice for all of those CEO-wannabes waiting for their dreams to come true? He says the same thing that he tells high school students preparing to make their way into the world…”Find something that you like to do… (and) try to get a job connected with whatever you’re interested in, whether or not it’s the trendy thing of the moment.”
